Mazda Bongo Buying Checklist

Below are a few pointers to help ensure you don't spend money on a van that is on its last legs:
  • Is there oil in the header tank? (this is the plastic tank located on the right side when looking at the engine bay). Make sure there is no oil inside it as this can indicate head gasket failure.
  • Is the coolant level topped up? This indicates a responsible / careful owner.
  • Is there a coolant alarm fitted?
  • Is there a milky substance on the oil filler cap? The cap is located under the drivers' seat in a petrol Bongo and under the passenger seat in a diesel Bongo. The milky substance usually indicates head gasket failure.
  • Is there any rust? Check wheel arches, all visible areas and as much of the underside as possible. Check past MOT's for advisories on rust.
  • Has the Bongo been under sealed / waxoyled at any point? This will prevent rust on the underside but only lasts about 3 years.
  • Has the cambelt been changed? If yes, when?
  • Are all the keys present?

Check to ensure the following are working (if fitted):

  • Electric roof - ask the owner to show you how if you are not sure
  • Lights (internal and external)
  • Indicators
  • Fans / air conditioning
  • Fridge
  • Hob
  • Electrical sockets
  • Heating

Make sure you see the following:

  • Previous MOT certificates
  • Service records
  • V5 document
  • Any receipts (including cambelt)
  • Original purchase documents wherever possible

Take the Bongo for a test drive and listen out for any strange knocking noises, squeals or squeaks. Also monitor the temperature gauge to ensure there are no erratic movements that could indicate a problem with the coolant system.

Don't forget you can also arrange for a mechanic to look over the vehicle for you and the RAC carry out inspections for around £99.00.
